Canteen Duties

(Back to Duty Roster)

Hygiene

The most important aspect of this duty is to maintain a high standard of hygiene, and to assist in this we ask you to bring and take away your own clean tea towels for each session.

On arrival, please report to the Officer of the Day (OOD) and check that the whole canteen is clean; if necessary run a mop over the floor.  Visually inspect all work surfaces for signs of mice or other infestation and wipe thoroughly prior to use.  Children under 16should not be allowed behind the kitchen counter, and under no circumstances should pets should not be allowed in the Club House.

Timings

The person on Canteen duty will be given/sent a duty reminder form approx four weeks before the duty date (if two duties are close together both reminders may be sent together). The reminder form also contains the name and telephone number of the OOD. The Canteen officer should arrive by 1.30pm on the Saturday but no later than 1.45pm. The club closes at 6.00pm. On Sunday the Canteen Officer should aim to be at the club by 8.45am or 9.00am at the latest. Club closes at 6.00pm or can be earlier as directed by the OOD.

Canteen Facilities

Assist the OOD in opening the canteen windows. Instructions for the water heater are posted in the kitchen area; ask the OOD for assistance if these are not clear.    Take particular care when lifting and moving kettles between the cooker and work surfaces.   Check that the First Aid kit is visible and accessible next to the microwave oven.

Selling

Your main task is selling drinks and sweets to customers.  Prices are set out on the list on the wall.    You may also be asked to take money in connection with the hire of club boats.   The rules governing the hire of boats are set out in the OOD’s duties, and involve taking a £15 deposit, of which £5 may be repaid (for Oppys it is £10 deposit of which £5 is repaid) once the OOD is satisfied that all kit has been returned and correctly replaced.

Welcoming

Visitors should be welcomed, and invited to sign the visitors’ book, particularly if they intend to sail as guests of a member.  Membership forms and club details are available near the notice boards.

Closing of Duty

At the close of your duty, at a time suggested by the duty OOD in accordance with current attendance and weather conditions, ensure that all outstanding debts are paid, and sweets and drinks are replaced in their respective containers.   Clean the floor and work surfaces thoroughly, and assist the OOD in emptying rubbish sacks, cleaning and replenishing the toilets, and closing the windows. Replace the cash box in the microwave oven.

Communication with the Safety Boat /OOD

When racing is not taking place it is recommended one of the two-way radios should be left in the canteen so that the Safety Officer/OOD can be contacted if required. To gain the Safety boat officer/crew’s attention in an emergency use either the Radio, or push the race starting hooter button (located on the side of the race hut towards the top) or the Megaphone.

Thank you for volunteering for this important role, which I hope will give you the opportunity to meet other club members.
