Juniors
We have a thriving Junior Club consisting of young sailors aged 8 to 16 who have completed an RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Stage 1 or above. (For those looking to learn to sail you will find details of courses open to Juniors under Training).
We meet approximately once a month on a Sunday afternoon (see Club calendar for dates). These supervised sessions are run by RYA qualified instructors with the help of assistants and include a mixture of training, games and racing.
Youngsters can either sail in their own boat or use a Club boat – we currently have Toppers, Optimists and Picos.
The aims of Junior Club are:
- To have fun and make new friends
- To build on and improve sailing skills
- To have an opportunity to sail different types of boats
- To have an introduction to racing
There is no charge for Junior Club (which is only open to Club members) and the usual charge for hiring a Club boat is waived.
Please note that a parent must remain at the Club and be available to help out either on the water or assist with rigging and de-rigging boats.
For further information please contact: Bob Elliott on 01622 817127 or membership@tonbridgesailing.org
In addition to Junior Club, there is a series of races for Juniors (up to age 14) & for Cadets (age 14 or over as at 1st January) which are held on some Saturday afternoons throughout the season. (Please see the Club Calendar for dates).
These races are open to any Junior or Cadet member of the club, however experienced. You can sail in any or all of the races – just turn up & take part. (To qualify for the series it's 4 out of 6 races to count).
There is no formal coaching or assistance at these races, but there is safety cover and a Race Officer to explain the course, starting procedures etc. Again a parent would be required to remain at the club. If you wish to hire a club boat for these races, you would need to pay the normal hire charge.
